3 Things I Absolutely Love About Children

We have a tradition in our family. Whenever anyone, or all of us, is grumpy, someone announces it’s time to play ‘Three Things You Love.’  Then we all take turns stating three things we love.

We have rules, though. We try to not state things we have shared before. That way we shift the focus from what we lack to our abundance of blessings. If we didn’t have these rules I would always say, “I love butterflies, sunsets, and chocolate.”

As we approach the season of giving thanks, one thing for which I’m grateful is children. I have always loved kids. I even love those kids whose behaviors make them hard to love, because even on their worst days, I can see their beautiful spirit trying to surface.

I don’t know if it’s because I was a teacher for more than two decades, or if I’m just strange this way, but I spend a lot of time thinking about the magical qualities that are unique to children.

There are many characteristics that come to mind when I think about children. Though, there are three I absolutely adore.

1) Sense of wonder
Kids see the world through a filter of delight and awe. Everything is magical.

I see it often when parents are just trying to get from the car to the store when all of a sudden their 5-year-old finds a ladybug. The entire world stops as they bend their little knees and stare for as long as they’re allowed. Children practice presence naturally.

2) Sense of fun
It is said that children laugh more than 300 times a day, whereas adults laugh less than 20 times a day. I’m not sure if that’s true: but I do know that kids laugh a lot. They’re always ready for a reason to laugh out loud, the kind of full belly laugh that us adults only experience occasionally.

3) Sense of Curiosity
Even though we adults tire of it, I absolutely love children’s natural curiosity. I love their hunger to learn about the world, how things work, and why things happen the way they do.

Children are definitely at the top of my list of things I love. I can’t imagine a world in which there are no children. They teach us lessons about living in the moment with joyful hearts. Let’s listen, shall we?

While we try to teach our children all about life, our children teach us what life is all about. ~ Angela Schwindt
