Welcome to Tammy’s Teachings!

“Everybody knows how to raise children, except the people who have them.” ~P. J. O’Rourke

I don’t know about you, but before I had my own kids I had it all figured out. I was quite clear about what my own children would and wouldn’t do. My kids would never talk back to me, always be respectful of others, and be A+ students. I really believed all that and more. Then I became a parent.

The challenge is children aren’t robots. They can’t be programmed to do “x,y,z” when we provide, “a,b,c.” No matter how good we are, kids will be kids.

Now that I’m 25+ years into the teaching profession and parenting (which is a combined 50+ years, just to get credit for both roles), I’ve learned a lot about what it takes to raise happy, independent children.

I am still no expert. However, I do have a few degrees, read a lot, and keep up with current research on parenting trends. My intent is to create a community of people just like me: folks that are trying to do the best we can with what we have (which is mostly a bunch of opinions that are awesome until the kids test every plan).

I invite you to gather around and explore new ways to think about raising children. Come sit around the campfire and let’s chat about the joys and challenges of parenting.

Who is Tammy Harris?

I am one of a rare breed as a San Diego native. In my spare time, (what’s that?) I love to read, write and draw. I also enjoy walking, biking, and photography. In fact, you can find many of my photographs and drawings scattered throughout Tammy’s Teachings.

Most importantly, my husband and I are proud parents of two adult children (and one sassy dog). Jacob is a graduate of Hawaii Pacific University, with a major in marine biology. My daughter, Alexandra, is a graduate of Drexel University in Philadelphia, with a bachelor’s in communications. Sugar (the fluffiest of the three) majors in barking when she’s not supposed to and sleeping all day.

Here are some degrees, and such, that may not buy me a lot of clout with my kids, but matter a lot in education:

  • Classroom teacher for 14 years
  • Administrative Services Credential (which means I can be a principal)
  • Master’s degree in Special Education
  • Coordinator for San Diego Office of Education (2007 – 2017)
  • Director for National Board for Professional Teaching Standards (2017 – 2018)
  • Author and parent coach of Tammy’s Teachings

  • National Board Certified Teacher
  • District Teacher of the Year, 2007
